Joakim Mattson: Many Sides, All True to Who He Is

We met Joakim Mattson, the man behind Diabetesmannen on Instagram. For years, he has shared what it is like to live with type 1 diabetes, openly and without filters. He dresses in much the same way: true to who he is and wherever life takes him.

Who is Diabetesmannen?

Text: Andreas Nyberg / Published 2026-10-30 / Ambassadors

One day, he is out in the woods with his fishing rod, wearing a green suede jacket, dark green corduroy trousers and a knitted half-zip sweater. The next, he is wearing high-waisted tailored trousers with sharp creases.

- I think that contrast says quite a lot about me, he says.

More than one identity

Joakim has many sides to him. He writes, takes photographs, works out, goes fishing and would rather be out in nature than anywhere else. And then there is diabetes, something he has lived with for many years. Clothing is his way of expressing all these different sides of himself.

- I don’t want to have to choose just one identity. I can be dressed up one moment and out enjoying nature the next, and both are equally me.

Right now, it is his more dressed-up side that takes centre stage. Joakim has just finished his book, Diabetesmannen – Thoughts and Feelings About Type 1 Diabetes. It is about more than the condition itself. It explores everything surrounding it: thoughts, emotions, relationships and life in general.

Style without limits

That is why we admire what he does. He is honest, personal and unafraid to embrace several sides of himself at once. It is the same idea that inspires us at Ciszere: clothing that works both in the countryside and in the city, and that can be dressed up or down without losing sight of who you are.

- Style is about personality. You should dare to show different sides of yourself rather than trying to fit into a mould.
